What’s the single most critical skill for you to develop as you learn how to be successful and powerful in your network marketing business? Is it your communication skill? How about your listening skill? Or perhaps it’s your selling skills? What if it’s none of the above?
When you start your own business, you must begin to learn a set of skills in order to be successful. Listening skills, communication skills, prospecting skills, marketing skills, book keeping skills — these are all areas where you are required to learn. But perhaps the most critical skill of all for you to develop, and one you will seldom hear about in this context, is your ability to hold your belief.
Your belief is your starting point and in the absence of it everything stops. Conversely, when you believe, you start to take action. So one of the great powers of observation you can bring to your business is to be aware of when or where you are hesitating to take action. Why? Because that hesitation is a reflection of your lack of belief.
- Holding your belief is a skill. It’s your beliefs that drive you. This is so important to consider in building your business. Building a powerful belief is a choice you have control over. It requires the skill to deliberately choose your thoughts. After all, a belief is really nothing more than a habit of thinking.
- Weak beliefs make for weak results. As you operate your business, you will encounter situations — often daily — that test your belief. People won’t attend the presentation you scheduled them for, or they won’t call you back, or they won’t be interested in or believe your opportunity is real. When that happens, do you hold strong in the conviction of your belief about what you know to be true? Or do you allow those situations to cause you to question your own belief and start to wonder if this really is going to work, or whether you’ll ever make a profit?
- Strong belief makes for strong results. People are looking for leadership and a large part of being a leader is holding to your own belief in the face of someone else’s counter belief. When you do that you come across differently and the right people respond differently. You know your company’s system works and you choose to continue to follow it. You know your opportunity is real and you aren’t shaken when someone else disagrees. That translates into your posture, your confidence and your results.
- Your beliefs are yours. Trust in your own beliefs and ensure that the beliefs you choose are your own. It’s very easy to lapse into altering your beliefs to match those of your prospects. When you do that, you are doing yourself and them a disservice. You have an opportunity that can enable your prospect to set himself free. Your highest service is with the people who don’t initially share your belief, and so your job is to hold to your belief in the face of their counter belief and to help them move off the fence — one way or the other
