In sports, the idea of “playing to win” as opposed to “playing not to lose” is well understood. And you see the distinction in results time after time. The team that plays to win inevitably wins, whereas the those who attempt to play not to lose inevitably lose. It’s just the way it works. But the concept of playing to win carries over into your personal life and into your business as well. This begs the question: In your business and in your life, are you playing to win or are you playing not to lose?

It’s easy to recognize the difference. The team that is playing to win is hungrier, more aggressive, more confident, and relentless. The team that is playing not to lose becomes tentative, cautious, lays back and ultimately gets caught. Sadly, in life and in your home business, 97% of people play not to lose.

Here are the five key ways to ensure you are playing to win in your life and in your business.

Be decisive. Successful people make their decisions quickly and change their minds slowly whereas as unsuccessful people do the opposite — they make their decisions slowly and change their minds quickly. What is your pattern? Are you decisive and confident in your actions? Do you step into your personal power, decide and then take action accordingly? Or are you prone to paralysis by analysis? There is a big difference.

Expect to win. When you play to win, you expect to win. You are focused on scoring touchdowns, goals, or points. You assess the opponent and you attack. If you meet with resistance or opposition, you adjust your game plan accordingly and change your attack. You do not lapse into a defensive shell attempting to ride out the game and minimize your losses. When you are playing to win in your business and in your life, setbacks are merely cause to refine your attack.

Be relentless. There is no quit when you are playing to win. You never give up, even when the clock is ticking down. In fact, when you are playing to win, the less time on the clock the more relentless you become. Winners persist without exception. Losers persist until they quit.

Be energetic. Highest energy wins. You know this to be true in sports. Are you bringing a quickened pace to your business activities and the pursuit of your personal goals? When you slow the pace, it becomes more difficult to kick things up and it becomes easier for you to be taken out of your game.

Play full out. Often times, when you start a business, it is because you have found yourself backed into a corner. Usually it is a financial corner, but often it’s also a corner full of frustration, discontentment and even anger. Realize that in all likelihood, you find yourself backed into a corner precisely because you have been playing not to lose. And when you are backed into a corner, the only way out is by playing full out to win. You provide your highest effort in everything you do and leave it all out on the field.
